Rosenmontag '24 highlights
i.e., the genius of Jacques Tilly
I'm just back from my third Düsseldorfer Rosenmontag, and thought it would be fun to share some of the political criticism that so epitomizes the Carnival festivals all along the Rhine with my Englisch speaking readers. The person who for me has come to epitomize the very best in visual political satire, Jacques Tilly, is the artist behind all eight of the works shown in this post. Actually, he had a total of 12 in Monday's parade, but I have excluded the four that would require explaining to folks who don't closely follow events in Germany. Because a joke that needs explaining is a joke ruined. By the way, all photos in this post are copyright © 2024 by Stephen Schiff. All rights reserved.
Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and Donald Putinovich Trump are two of Tilly's favorite targets, and were the each the subject of two characterizations in this year's event. Let's start with Putin.
