It's an old Soviet joke, taught to me by an ex-Company colleague in the early '70s. The two leading Soviet newspapers were Pravda (Truth en anglais) and Izvestiya, which sort of means News. So, in transliteration: In Truth there is no News, and in News there is no Truth. That, together with dismal editorial behavior, provided inspiration for two new artworks of mine, based on the New York Times and Washington Post editions of 22 August 2024. The two are one of a kind works, as I found it morally compromising enough to put money in their pockets by purchasing a single copy of each. While waiting for an opportunity to show them in public, they have been photographed for the benefit of paid subscribers. See below! Neither image appears on my web site.
The basic idea behind these works came from a group of artworks that line a wall in Tim Raue's restaurant. Individually they are black and white and have the appearance of newspapers that have been entirely redacted. So, patterns of black rectangles overlayed on a white field, with rows and columns suggestive of a newspaper layout. My motivation, to shame the once great newspapers required deviating from the original scheme by using the actual mastheads, and then it followed that there should be some words and pictures.
